Category: accessible Devices
Hey, all you techies, who is keeping up with the development of Anroid?
I just read on pc world about the htc desire and the moto shules coming to vzw. What is the scoop on these phones? Are they exciting possibilities for out-of-the-box accessability? What do you think, could they be the supposable IPhone killer?
Sheesh, that sounds a might extreme.
Anyway, they have peaked the geek in me! Lol, yep, still in that 30-day trial period.
Hope to read plenty of replies. *smile*
Well iPhone killers probably not, but i say this never using one of these. However they if memory serves correct they will be running android 2.0 and that should have a pretty good built in screen reader that works phone wide ala the iPhone. So i say if you can since you are a vzw customer try one out if you can and let us know how it is and if you have any questions.
To post two do you have any documentation on there being a screen reader? My understanding from looking over the new features is there will be an accessibility API that will allow application authors to make individual applications accessible, but there is no screen reader that will work with the entire system.
There will be a screen reader of sorts called Talkback. I believe the first version is being released soon. How it works or how good it is going to be is a different story. I'll post more about Talkback soon, I'll go Google it, I know they just announced it and I don't know how comprehensive it is or anything.
wow!! i just switched 2 vzw yesterday n im pretty happy with the ozone, but the internet isn't workin all that gud, i wonder why? someone please help!
i don't have any documentation other than the word of another zoner who is using a g1 with android 1.5 and if i understood correctly there is a screen reader burried in there that you can activate but doesn't yet give phone wide support, which i told should be coming in 2.0 Talk back could be it. not sure though.
There are two screen readers available, spiel and talkback. They only work on Android 1.6. Talkback is at least preinstalled on some phones, spiel isn't. They both appear to be early prototypes and not feature complete. Both are open source and I've been able to get talkback to compile although I haven't tried running it on an emulator yet. for more info see the following links.
